Journalism

Journalism Today

The human race has evolved over thousands of years. We have learned to create tools from stone, vehicles for travel such as cars, and modern dwellings for ourselves. And we continue to advance as a species with our technology too.

Journalism is essentially a method of inquiry and literary style that aims to provide a service to the public through the analysis of news and other information. It is the job of the journalist to provide new information to the public that is in the interests of the public. Journalism integrity is largely based on the following key principles: truth, disclosure, and editorial independence.

Review of Donal Skehan's Home-Cooked Tour Newbridge

The month of November was wet and dull for many of us here in Ireland as the weather brought much misery upon the nation. I admit that I myself was feeling a little "down in the dumps ". However, my spirits were lifted when I heard that young home-taught chef Donal Skehan was due to come to my local Riverbank in Newbridge. And I knew that I had to do everything in my power to get my hands on one of those tickets. Fortunately, I didn't have to beg for long because my parents knew that I'm a fan-I watch his show  Kitchen Hero:Home Cooked on rte two every Thursday, after all. Soon enough, my mother surprised me one day after college with two tickets to see the Home Cooked show at the Riverbank. Needless to say, I was delighted.

At precisely 8:00pm on Saturday, November 9th  my mother and I had taken our seats in the auditorium in the riverbank arts centre. And it was packed with people. Mostly women, I admit. Although I did see a few husbands accompanying their wives. The first thing you need to know about Donal Skehan's Kitchen Hero:Home Cooked tour is that it is essentially a cooking show, where the chef, Donal Skehan,  prepares and demonstrates how to create beautiful dishes right before your eyes. All in all, it's great entertainment. Now before I really get down to describing these fabulous dishes, I must first comment on the atmosphere inside the auditorium. From the minute I walked into the auditorium, I could feel a sense of excitement and anticipation, which simply radiated out of everyone gathered. Everyone was in good spirits; chatting excitedly with the person beside them, regardless if they knew one another before- hand. The place was buzzing with energy. And when Donal Skehan himself appeared, complete with apron and a big, warm smile on his face, the excitement was palpable. The noise was deafening, and every single seat within the auditorium had been occupied. The young self-taught cook welcomed us warmly, and then he got right into the show. He told us that he would be preparing 5 delicious dishes, and that it would be our job as the audience to help him when requested. The five dishes included:
  • Pad Thai - an Asian dish which consisted of noodles, garlic cloves, coriander, chilli and prawns.
  • Mexican Fish Tacos- a Californian classic, inspiration from wonderful Mexican heat and spice. Ingredients included tortillas, avocados, peppers and chilli sauce with chicken breast.
  • Cheesy Ham Hock Spinach Crepes- a green coloured pancake, with a twist filled with cheese and ham.
  • Brioche French Toast With Berries and Nutella- french toast with helpings of sweet berries and nutella. Ingredients include eggs, vanilla extract, 4 slices of brioche, softened butter, berry sauce and nutella.
  • Chocolate Tiramisu- a beautiful Italian dessert with creamy layers wrapped together with coffee soaked ladyfinger biscuits and shavings of dark and white chocolate.
The food was delicious and we all got to have a taste as the dishes were passed around. I had never experienced a show such as this before. I have seen several shows, but never a cooking show quite like this. It had great food, but the best thing about it was that it was fun. Donal Skehan proved that not only was he a skilled chef but that he was also a natural entertainer; offering witty jokes and actively involving the audience.  In conclusion, Donal Skehan's Kitchen Hero Home Cooked Tour was truly worth the money and it is a great night out for all the family as it was also very child friendly,  and I would definitely recommend it to those cooking enthusiasts and fans of Donal.
